Here is a sample of the kind of writing activity you can develop for your business writing course. This activity pertains to the "Writing Memos, E-Mail, Letters, and Faxes" chapter in Write for Business.

Sample Writing
  1. Review the guidelines and models for the basic memo and the expanded memo, noting which elements of the expanded form are not used in the simpler form. For each element unique to the expanded memo, cite when or why you would include the element. Share your ideas with the class.
  2. Find a memo written by a businessperson. Use the checklist at the end of the chapter to evaluate the memo's content and use this chapter's guidelines and models to evaluate the memo's form. Then read the memo and your assessment to the class.
  3. Choose a recent email message that you could revise as an expanded memo. Complete the revision and submit both forms of the message to your instructor.
